ABSTRACT: This report compiles the most relevant data from the action-research project carried out by the research team. The objective is to analyze cultural appropriation practices and their relationship with the construction of Chorotega cultural identity in the community of Matambú, to identify pedagogical contributions with cultural relevance. The findings presented correspond to the 2023–2024 period and corroborate the work conducted, demonstrating the commitment to developing and managing mechanisms for cooperation and interdisciplinary integration among the researchers involved and the other participants, particularly in the community of Matambú. Some actions undertaken to meet the project’s objectives included on-site visits, group meetings with participants (e.g., women and youth from the community), and the implementation of in-depth interviews with community leaders and key informants. Significant findings include recognition of the importance of key action areas for intercultural work in Indigenous contexts such as Matambú, which promote respect, understanding, and collaboration among diverse cultures. Moreover, respect for and recognition of cultural diversity fosters the valuing of Indigenous traditions, languages, and practices, enriches social bonds, and counters cultural prejudice. The study also points to the need to incorporate topics such as cultural diversity, interculturality, and Indigenous territories into initial teacher education programs to enhance understanding of these issues and their connections to school curricula. Some conclusions include: two key functions of symbols within culture, reflected in participant responses. Based on Páez (2013), these relate to the connection between memory and dynamism, symbols evoke remembering, anticipating, and forgetting, and their relationship to communication and the need for ritual praxis that activates encounters with others. Additionally, following Berbeta (2015) and the study’s findings, symbols help residents of Matambú create meanings and mobilize past knowledge that enables them to organize their experiences in meaningful ways, which in turn facilitates cultural appropriation. Finally, cultural identity, shaped by a series of practices that are meaningful to those who embody it, is also crossed by dynamics of conflict and evolves, with a past and a future marked by ongoing transformations (Rojas, 2004). It is at this point that both the transformation and preservation of the core elements of identity become critical in developing educational and community initiatives that foster dialogue and reinforce identity in the face of new challenges.
