ABSTRACT: Based on the data produced by the tests applied in 1988, this study found that: The national average for the First cycle is higher than the others in Mathematics, Sciences and Social Studies. Schools with more students present better averages, with the exception of Mathematics. In all subjects, daytime institutions have higher averages than nighttime ones. Private institutions, followed by semi-official ones, show better averages than public institutions in all subjects. The best averages are concentrated in institutions located in urban centers. When comparing the data from the 1988 tests with those from the previous two years, it was found that in Mathematics, the best averages were found in 86; while in Spanish, a significant advance was seen for 88. In Sciences and Social Studies the highest averages are concentrated in 87.
