ABSTRACT: The purpose of the study is to identify the implications of the call center phenomenon regarding academic and work expectations of young employees in these companies. The population that collaborated in the project consisted of 118 subjects who fulfilled the characteristics of average active employees at the time of contact, 3 recruiters of different companies, 3 former call center employees, 2 Costa Rican Investment Promotion Agency (CINDE for its acronym in Spanish) employees, a person in charge of the Curricular Section in Vocational Education of the Ministry of Public Education (MEP for its acronym in Spanish). A survey was applied to the 118 people to establish an overall profile of the population, and in-depth interviews with some key interviewees were conducted. Then, the information was recorded in field journals; the interviews were recorded with previous consent of the participants; and the corresponding transcriptions were made using pseudonyms of the interviewees. The following results of the study are mentioned in relation to the expectations at a work level: The work of call center is only temporary. It is considered an important source of income while complying with other types of activities (study, among others) that will allow them to do other tasks. Some consider the passage through customer service is a type of temporary trampoline that will lead to higher positions within the same organization. In this way, it is also transitory and not an activity to be entirely devoted to. Academic expectations relate to completing or initiating university studies. A significant phenomenon is that since the position is conditioned to the English proficiency level, their initial expectation was only to comply with this requirement in order to work. In some cases, they did not even have a fixed idea of what they wanted to do; they only refer to the option that is open to them under this condition. Some of the main limitations encountered while conducting this study were the following: Access to the cases for the application of the survey was mediated by a refusal by the contacted companies to have their employees participate in the study during working hours or to provide contact data of the population in order to contact them at another time. There was no support from CINDE to urge companies to have their employees participate. Even though CINDE provided general information at a national level, they argued that they could not commit to support the development of the study. The lack of openness was resolved by applying a snowball sampling, however, the time came when the line of communication between subjects was lost and previously stipulated sample was not completed.
