ABSTRACT: The study set out to determine the family and educational orientation needs perceived by orientation professionals from the Regional Department in Northern San Jose based on their working relationship with parents. Furthermore, the lifelong learning needs that guidance counselors must know to assist parents were analyzed. The research subjects were 35 orientation professionals from daytime high schools in the Regional Department in Northern San Jose. The entire population participated. The information was collected by means of a questionnaire consisting of 13 open-ended questions of the subjects to be investigated and was submitted for consultation of orientation professionals currently working in daytime high schools who were not part of the focus group. Some of the conclusions from the findings are: Regarding the family-type guidance needs recognized by the orientation professionals, it was found that training is needed in terms of the management of boundaries and consequences at a family level as well as knowing how to handle rules in order for them to be clear. Among the training needs to be worked with families raised by the guidance professionals, it was established the need to receive at school training with those families with the aim of promoting positive interaction to improve coexistence. They also mention crisis intervention with different groups and topics related to one's purpose in life. There are no significant differences in the academic and emotional support for students through out high school. However, it is observed that seventh graders have more support. There are many reasons that explain this reality; one possibly being that seventh grade is a transition phase from elementary school to high school, and parents feel the need to support their children during this period. The educational institutions favor parental involvement by means of appointments set up by the institution where issues with the students are discussed. Seldom do parents attend the institution on their own initiative. The implementation of different strategies (school for parents, family visitations, among others), that promote an institution-parent relationship, would be beneficial.
