ABSTRACT: This research carried out an exploratory study to identify: a) the presence or not of bullying in first and second cycle students of some schools in the Costa Rican school system; b) identify the characteristics of its manifestation; c) identify the physical and behavioral characteristics of those who are victims of bullying in school; and d) identify the physical and behavioral characteristics of those who victimize peers. An intentional sample of children was selected from third to sixth grade in elementary school from public and private schools. 916 schoolchildren participated (421 male and 456 female) between the ages of 9 and 14. A questionnaire was prepared to identify both the characteristics of the bully and the bullied taking into account international criteria to detect this phenomenon. The data obtained was analyzed in percentages. Only those duly filled instruments were used. The study made it possible to determine the main characteristics of the bullies and bullied; the places where the harassment occurred most frequently; whether or not the teacher noticed what was happening, and the effects of the assault on the victims. The following conclusions include: • Bullying is a phenomenon that also occurs to Costa Rican schoolchildren. The results obtained are comparable to the studies carried out in 25 countries where a range of aggression rates was found between peers ranging from 3% in Sweden to 20% in Denmark, and on average 10% of students who attack their peers. • The data gathered from the Costa Rican sample is a wake-up call for those who have the task of educating since the general indicator obtained is 14.3% which is considered a high percentage. Because of this, early detection becomes relevant as it could contribute to reduce the devastating consequences it has on schoolchildren who are victims of bullying. • A 63% of the children who lashed out against their peers said no one noticed their attacks, so they remained unpunished. Consent is an added factor that encourages violence in the classroom as it contributes to moral damage, low self-esteem, physical and psychological damage to victims who are exposed to feelings of shame, fear, dread, desolation that could contribute to school dropout.
