ABSTRACT: The objectives of this study are: a) To perform an analysis of factors to detect evidence of construct validity in the Spanish test that the MEP applied to eleventh-grade students in 1997. b) To analyze, under the Item Response Theory, aspects of technical quality of the aforementioned test that include techniques to determine the reliability of mentioned test, as well as the individual psychometric properties for each of the items that compose it and c) Detect through the Item Response Theory, possible biases by categories population, comparing students from public schools against students from private schools and comparing students from rural schools to students from urban schools. The analysis was carried out using the Classical Theory of the Test, but for the purpose of this work, a model of Response Theory to the items (IRT) was also applied to contribute about the psychometric properties of the items that make up the test. Among the conclusions, the following are mentioned: The work achieved an approach to the management of IRT, through which they can recognize the advantages that IRT offers for the development of tests or instruments. In addition, related to the TCT, both for the analysis of the items and that it allows tests with a higher level of precision. This level of precision facilitates a more accurate decision making and allows selecting items at different skill levels for the development of tests related to the construct under investigation. This contributes to the attention of the urgent need to create a bank of items that support the tests of Spanish at the high school level. According to the TRI analysis, 80% of the test items should be revised to improve them, since they do not offer enough information and have little discriminatory power. 20% could be used in future tests. Only 13% of the total items in the test show bias. Of this 13%, 57% express it in discrimination (4 items), and 43% in difficulty (3 items).
