ABSTRACT: The study seeks to diagnose the grade of proficency of the language that, as an instrument of communication through the written record, is showed by students who graduate from Costa Rican High School. Regarding the degree of mastery that the students obtained in the morphosyntactic and lexical field of the standard language in their written record, were found serious deficiencies in terms of verbal and nominal morphosyntax, as well as in the use of morphemes and links. It was also seen that the different possibilities of structuring the system are not being used; for example, the use of the pronoun is avoided and its use limits the nominal case. On the other hand, regarding to lexic, the tests showed an excessively impoverished language that, faced with the need for new meanings, which affects the periphrasis, which damages the selection of the item in Lexico. Furthermore, in the redactions analyzed, abundant unnecessary repetitions (little use of synonyms), and lack of knowledge of precise and adequate Lexico is evident. Common phrases and expressions devoid of meaning also abound, causing difficulties in understanding the message. Similarly, when it comes to the structuring of the message, the punctuation is restricted to a few signs, and furthermore, it is, for the most part, inadequate. Almost all the texts can be cataloged as incomplete, since they fail to develop the message correctly: there is a lack of conceptual and expository planning; there are redundant, dark and neglected exposures, both in composition and style. In fact, it was in the structuring of the written message, where the lowest percentages of mastery were found, since it was found that the use of simple structures and items of recharged and required subordination, outline the presence of features of a restricted code, with evident typified linguistic behaviors. On the other hand, research indicates that there are no differences in performance or quality of the written record between students of different ages or from different educational modalities. On the contrary, variables such as sex, geographic location and socio-economic level, do affect the level of mastery that the subjects manifest in the written expression.en
