El impacto de la formación universitaria en la vida de mujeres que estuvieron vinculadas a la UCR en las décadas de los años 1940 y 1950.

Abstract

El interés de la investigadora ha sido develar la perspectiva histórica de las mujeres que participaron en la Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR) durante las décadas de 1940 y 1950, para mostrar el impacto de la formación universitaria en ellas, en sus familias y en la sociedad costarricense. La autora coincide con Martínez (2010) cuando plantea que las generalizaciones hechas sobre la historia, en especial sobre los temas vinculados a la educación, invisibilizaron los procesos vividos por grupos no dominantes, como las mujeres. Por esta razón, el aporte de este trabajo está en el registro de entrevistas a féminas que fueron estudiantes en el período mencionado. Retoma varios aspectos relacionados con la participación en la universidad, sus motivaciones y los procesos desarrollados a partir de sus condiciones de existencia. Los relatos si bien están reseñados a partir de lo que recuerdan sobre ese momento, han servido para comprender más en profundidad sobre el impacto que tuvo la educación superior en sus vidas a nivel profesional y familiar. La información se ubica en el marco socio-histórico en las décadas de los años cuarenta y cincuenta, años de inicio de la Universidad de Costa Rica. Dichos relatos de una u otra manera son ubicados a partir de otras fuentes referidas tales como Actas del Consejo Universitario, registros de diferentes oficinas universitarias y revisión de material bibliográfico. Las entrevistas se hicieron a un grupo de diez mujeres, que fueron contactadas por diferentes vías, accediendo a compartir sus recuerdos. Se partió del discurso suscitado del diálogo con ellas, con el objetivo de buscar, conocer y comprender sus vivencias. Entre las conclusiones del estudio se mencionan las siguientes:

En los registros se encuentran mujeres que ingresaron en la universidad en carreras no tradicionales, lo que deja abierta la posibilidad de continuar estudios para conocer sus intereses y motivaciones. En cuanto a la cantidad de mujeres graduadas, tal como se ha mencionado para el año 1960 la sumatoria fue mayor en cuanto a los hombres, siendo una tendencia a la que poco a poco han continuado incorporándose mujeres tanto como funcionarias, docentes y como estudiantes. Tal como se ha demostrado en este trabajo, la presencia femenina en la Universidad de Costa Rica tuvo y tiene presencia importante en cuanto a cantidad de alumnas y en cuanto a su participación. El estudio abre gran cantidad de interrogantes, sobre la vida de las mujeres de mediados de siglo XX y la construcción de nuestra ciudadanía. También, se comprende que la UCR fue un medio y el espacio para la participación efectiva de las féminas, en su condición de estudiantes, docentes, funcionarias, papel que se complementó con su presencia en el mundo laboral.

ABSTRACT: It is the interest of the researcher to uncover the historic perspective of women who participated to the University of Costa Rica (UCR) during the 1940s and 1950s in order to show the impact of university training on them, on their families and Costa Rican society. The author agrees with Martinez (2010) in terms of the generalizations on the history specially about the topics related to education; the processes experiences by non-dominant groups, women, were invisible. For this reason, the contribution of this work lies in registering interviews with females who were students in the aforementioned period; it also refers back at several aspects related to participation in the university, its motivations and the processes developed from its conditions of existence. The stories, while told from what they recall about that moment, have served to better understand the impact of Higher Education on their lives at the professional and family levels. The information is located in the socio-historical framework of the forties and fifties, early years of the University of Costa Rica. These stories in one way or another are a part of other referral sources such as the minutes from the University Council, records of various university offices and review of the literature. The interviews were conducted to a group of ten women who were contacted through different ways and agreed to share their memories. The starting point was the discourse generated from the dialogue with them with the objective of seeking, knowing and understanding their experience. The findings of the study include the following:

• Women who were admitted in the university in non-traditional majors are found in the records which leaves the possibility of continuing their studies open to know their interests and motivations. • Regarding the number of graduate women, as mentioned, by 1960, the amount was greater than men becoming a trend which women have gradually continued to join as staff, teachers and students. Just as has been demonstrated in this work, the female presence at the University of Costa Rica had and has a significant presence in terms of the number of female students and their participation. • The study raises many questions about the lives of women of the mid-twentieth Century and the growth of humankind. It is also understood that the UCR was a means and a space for the effective participation of women as students, teachers and staff, a role that was complemented with their presence in the world.
