ABASTRACT: This report summarizes the work done during the years 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 by the research team. Its general objective was to create a system of indicators to follow-up on the permanence of the student population of the University of Costa Rica. As a strategy, the retrospective and prospective student cohort studies were used while considering that this type of research allowed to learn from the past and monitor the future. From the project, the System to Follow-up the Permanence of the Student Population (SISEPPOE for its acronym in Spanish) was created which is a set of applications that query databases of students from the University of Costa Rica, processes the information, and generates reports according to the information requirements of the project. In addition to the SISEPPOE, the following results are identified: document of requisites, documents with the definition of variables, categories and codes, the R Script, protocols on the confidential and ethical handling of information, the preparation of 143 charts with each one of the 14 participating majors, the preparation of methodological sheets for each of the 18 proposed indicators as well as to generate the information for said sheets for 15 student cohorts from 2002 to 2016 and for each participating major, and characterization documents of the student population of each major in addition to their permanence and graduation. These contributions of the research are an important input to the efforts of self-evaluation and reflection on the work of the majors, the fulfillment of its mission and objectives, the decisions making and the accreditation support, which would allow to identify challenges and propose actions to improve retention and graduation rates of the student population. Some of the conclusions are as follows: • From the teaching perspective, the project resulted in the research team becoming aware of the characteristics of the student body and the immerse complexity of analyzing them in a detailed way. In addition, it is valued as important the reconstruction of the history of each major as an essential activity to understand the information that is generated. This allowed thus to reflect on the complexity of higher education as a right and the duty of the public university in ensuring both the entry, permanence and graduation of students in times of privatization and commercialization of education. • From the research perspective, the project is meant to bring closer and strengthen the knowledge of new methodologies of analysis in order to explain the characterization of the population as an object of a consolidated and interdisciplinary study
