T: This report describes the process and results of a study carried out (from an ethnographic perspective) in three public secondary education institutions, whose goals were to know the relationship between theory and practice in mathematics teaching in the Costa Rican educational context, the teachers' perception of this subject of their role as educators and the role that researchers deduce when observing and analyzing the daily practices of these teachers. It was also proposed, as a goal, to identify which factors determine the "theoretical" role, which the "in use" role and the consequences of the latter. To achieve the objectives, a bibliographic review on the theory and research of mathematics teaching was carried out, covering the studies carried out in the ten years prior to the start of the project (1994). In addition, the expectations regarding teaching and the role of the mathematics teacher considered in the curricular policies in force in Costa Rica were considered, as well as the changes that occurred with the new programs of the Educational Policy Towards the XXI Century. Data collection was carried out during the years 1994, 1995 and 1996 in two public institutions. This task consisted of observing classes and conducting interviews with the teachers who participated in the study, to find out what idea they had regarding their role and how the cultural baggage and previous experience (as mathematics students) affected their Teaching work. Some students were also interviewed to learn their appreciation of learning, classes, and the math teacher. In the third institution, a seminar-workshop was held on the role of the mathematics teacher (1996), in which the results of the study carried out in the first two high schools were used. In general, it was concluded that the gap between the theory and practice of mathematics teaching is such that it can be affirmed that they are not related. In addition, central categories were identified to characterize the perception that teachers have of their role and some factors that explain said role were determined.en
